sudo mount /dev/sda? /mnt

If you are writing that entry in a menu.lst of grub legacy it will not boot grub2 or an ext4 file system. You will need to set the usb to boot first in bios when you have the usb plugged and unplug it to use what ever you have installed now but you will need to restore your mbr. You will have to boot one of your older installed distros and restore the mbr You could convert your entire system to boot from grub2 but that is another story.

Disregard earlier posts. What distro do you have on your internal hd? Do you have any live cds? The reason I am asking is that grub legacy will not boot an ext4 partition. Grub2 will boot older distros though. You need to restore your internal hd mbr to the distro that resides on the internal hd and then plug in the external and see if it will boot and if not you need to be sure that usb is set to boot first in bios and if so we need to work on the mbr of your external cd. First though if you have no cds, backup the mbr so that you can recover.

I just saw this post.
I have Mint on my internal HD.
I have GParted. Will that help ?

I do not understand the rest of the Grub related details you have given.
Will GParted help or I have to download Live CD Mint ?

You have mint on your internal and external drive? If so are they the same version?

Ok this should get simpler, boot your internal mint then unplug your external drive.

From terminal

sudo grub

this should give you the grub prompt

grub> set root=(hd0,1)

grub> setup (hd0)

quit

Give me time to work on this please. It would be easier if you had mint on a cd.
