ERROR: Neither the sysfs interface links nor the iw command is available

I'm trying to run airmon-ng on centonts 5.8 server (command line only). I have an atheros AR2425 wireless device (ath5k) that shows up as wlan0. If I do:
# airmon-ng start wlan0 I get:
ERROR: Neither the sysfs interface links nor the iw command is available.
Please download and install iw from
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/...0.9.19.tar.bz2

I downloaded iw-0.9.19.tar.bz2 but when I run make I get:
iw.c:11:31: error: netlink/genl/genl.h: No such file or directory.
I also tried iw.tar.bz2 but that gave the same error. I have both libnl and libnl-devel installed.
How can I get this installed?

Have you attempted to install the wireless tools from the repos?

sysfsutils.i386 is already installed and there is no iw package available from the repo's - not for centos5 anyway. To be honest I don't know what the sysfs interface links are or where they come from, and I've tried three different versions of iw*.tar.bz2 but none will compile. Each version has given a different error that I couldn't resolve despite hours trawling google. Thanks if you have any further advice.
