Error messages when I try to install software I've dowloaded

I've been downloading and trying to install antivirus software. But quite often I get this error message:
__________________________________________________________
Dependency Resolution Failed

Installing xxxxxxthe filename[Local packages]
There are no installable providers of xxxxxxthe
filename[Local packages]

__________________________________________________________

Does anyone know what this means? It's happened too often for it to be just an occasional installation problem. Is there something I should do?

Thanks,

royeo

added for clarity: I'm running Suse 10.1 and the above file was clamAV. . . though it's generated this same message (except of course for the filename) for other attempted installs.

Firstly, what distribution are you running? Secondly what is the specific software and version you are trying to install? Thirdly, why exactly do you think you need antivirus on Linux?

Yea... No point yet... RARELY you can get your linux INFECTED...
EVEN if it gets infected... fixing it would be easy... UNLIKE SOME OS...

Why is your windows machine regularly infected? :P

Unless you try the NTFS RW drivers, isn't it limited to detection only?

Because its WINDOWS!
I dont use anti-virus on my Linux box either, I think a good firewall is prudent though. I use Firestarter.

NTFS? Pshaw! Fat-32... if its not compatible with linux, why on earth would I use it? ...

Besides.. its my understanding that you couldnt delete with the experimental drivers? Any editing of files cant change the file size I thought I read... regardless.. what TuxSurfer said... If you use windows, you get virii, worms, trojans, spyware.. you name it... though to be honest, mostly I get them because I dont care enough about the windows install to go out of my way to savegaurd it :
