Exclamation Error message /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

Hey,
i am a total linux freshman and have no idea what i'm doing. i installed ubuntu on my laptop and when i try and login it will give the error:
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

now my windows OS is saying that one of my disks neeed to be checked of consistency and says it needs to check the disk... it will then freeze when it gets to:
to skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s).

i'm really scared as i have multiple uni assignmets on my laptop that need to be handed up this week! can anyone help!

Using a different machine, you could download the manufacturer's disk utilities and run them. They're mostly harmless, and they work.

Use Ubuntu's liveCD to boot and mount the partition with your important data. You can then copy them to an external harddrive and reinstall. However, I'd recommend to check the disks for errors first. Ubuntu does not mess with your windows partitions unless you tell it to.
