error loading OS

Just now installed vector linux 3.2. When it boots, it says "error loading OS". But it boots with the help of CD. At the boot prompt I type "linux apm=off no-hlt root=/dev/hda3" Here is my partition information I created with cfdisk during setup:

Lable size type partition

hda1 103MB (Marked this as bootable) primary
hda2 256MB Type:Linux swap primary
hda3 5840MB Type linux primary

I configured lilo and installed it to hda3. I do not know the use of the hda1 partition I created and may be I should have installed lilo on that. I am not an expert.
Please help me

Thanks

try marking hda3 as active, if that doesnt work you need to install lilo into /dev/hda, the MBR.

Is it looking for lilo in hda1, as it is marked bootable.
I am thinking of having just 2 partitions, swap and root. will it work?

yea it will, you dont need a separate boot partition, the active(bootable) partition should be the partition where you installed lilo, it doesn't have to be the /boot partition, or just have lilo in the MBR then you don't have to worry about which one is active and such.
