There's an = missing in your export statement.

And is an X server actually running on that IP_ADDRESS,
and will it accept connections from whatever the servers
IP address is? xhost +IP_OF_ORACLE_INSTANCE

Thanks Tink for responding.

I have installed the Linux Redhat in a PC. I have a laptop as well which i have networked with the linux box. I am installing Oracle in the Linux box. The IP address of the Linux machine is 192.168.200.1 and the laptop is 192.168.200.2. I assume that in the command export DISPLAY =<IP_ADDRESS>:0.0, IP_ADDRESS will be the IP address of the Linux box.

I have tried the command as export DISPLAY =192.168.200.1:0.0 but still getting the same error.

How do i check on X server, whether it is functioning well and know which IP it is running from?

Is "the Linux box" running headless, or with a monitor, keyboard and mouse attached?
Are you logging into a GUI on the Linux-box (if yes, as which user?), or are you trying
to install from the laptop via ssh?

for the export to work you need to give that space a miss; it's
export DISPLAY=IP_ADDRESS:0.0
not
export DISPLAY =IP_ADDRESS:0.0
or
export DISPLAY = IP_ADDRESS:0.0

Also, you should only need to do this if a) the install is being run from a
remote machine with a X desktop running or b) from the local machine in a
GUI where you've su-ed to someone other than the person who logged into
the GUI ...

Cheers,
Tink

The Linux machine is complete with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I am logged in as root. then i am SU-ed to oracle and changed to the path where the setup for Oracle is. I am using GUI and i am running the Terminal where i am issuing the commands.

While logged in as oracle i have issued the command as shown below but still the error occurs. It accepts the command because it throws no error.

export DISPLAY=192.168.200.1:0.0

I am not installing from my laptop through SSH.

regards.

Easiest solution (and possibly best practice?): log in as the
oracle user, not as root.

2nd best: as root, run "xhost +localhost" before you do your
"export DISPLAY=:0.0" (no IP needed for the same machine) thing
for the oracle user.

Cheers,
Tink
