error installing netscape

First a little background. This is my frirst experiment with Linux, i downloaded the ISO's for Mandrake 9 and got the OS installed in less than an hour without a single headache. Now i want to learn how to install programs. Since the browser i'm using apparently doesnt have java, i figured i'd get a new one and kill two birds with one stone.

I downloaded the .tar.gz file for netscape 6.2. i was able to successfully unzip the package (yay for the newbie!) and inside i found an installer, no configure or make file. so i run the installer and get the following error message:

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 1510 (gtk_widget_hide): assertion `widget != NULL' failed.
./netscape-installer: line 48: 3160 Segmentation fault ./netscape-installer-bin --sync $@

i have no idea what aby of it means. Can anyone help me out?

I don't know Y U R getting the aborts...but one possible alternative could be MOZILLA.

Try downloading mozilla from www.mozilla.org....

See if it installs successfully...If U need JAVA, U can download it from either www.blackdown.org OR from Sun's website
www.javasoft.com

U can also go to www.opera.com and download their browser and see if it works.

Gtk is a graphical tool kit. It appears it may e opening a window. Make sure you are in you X session. Also make sure you have Gtk installed. Mozilla is just as good/bad as netscape. You will prob need the java anyway.

Hello,

I'm having trouble installing Netscape 7.2 onto the new Mandrake 10.1 Community. I have an AMD XP 3000, 256 MB RAM, NVidia Geforce if any of that matters. Mozilla is also installed btw. Logged in as root (KDE), I tried installing from the 7.2 CD as well as downloading the full install, also tried downloading the installer and trying it that way. I always get the same error in the terminal window:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

Anyone have any idea what this means? Any help would be sncerely appreciated.

Thanks
