the output that you posted from iwconfig tells us that the wireless device in your computer seems to be working. With that piece of information, we can move on to trying to connect to your wireless router. The output of the following command will tell us if your machine sees any wireless routers.
Please run the above and post the output into the forum.

wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Network is down

the card isnt on for some reason (some laptops have a hardware switch for some reason) try running this to activate it:it should then show up in your network manager applet (also try re-running the command that evo2 suggested).

ztcoracat: actually it seems those steps need to be done in the opposite order. Schneidz's post was in response to the output when joody ran "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" as reported in #18.

Thank you for correcting me.
I made the changes.

hello group as per the advise from the group members i did the following steps

1) i ran the first command is in sudo su is /sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan and result i got in the screen

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down.

2) next command i used sudo ifconfig wlan0 up the result is wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

this result are when the wireless hub device off.

after switching on the device i repeated the same steps.

then the results are

1) /sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan wlan0 No scan results

2) sudo ifconfig wlan0 up no results in the screen.

finely my error solved. now my lap top is able to connected with wireless hotspot.

i just put on wifi in my mobile device. and i did run the above commands.

what i understand from this wireless tethering option in the android mobile not enabled. after enabling that i got notification on the screen wireless networks available. above that i am beginner in the field of Linux. but i got tremendous support from this group to solve this issue. thanks a lot everybody.
