error in locking authority file

First time posting....please help.

Running Redhat 7.2. I installed KDE and when I type startx, i get the error "error in locking authority file /root/.Xauthority

and also "cant lock /tmp/X0-lock"

I did this before and fixed it a while back but cant remember what I did.... Is this common?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried running startx as a user instead of root?
