I am trying to install fontconfig 2.3.2 but I am getting the following error after I ./configure and make (./configure is working as far as i can tell):

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libz.a(inflate.o): relocation R_X86_64_32S against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/local/lib/libz.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [libfontconfig.la] Error 1

any ideas what is wrong?

Look if there's libz-devel package for your distribution. It wants it in a version for shared library, when it's not. libz-devel should have both.
