Question Error 18

I kept getting error 18 upon boot after several attempts of installing Linux Mint 6 and OpenSuse 11 on 3 different pc's. I did a whole list of off the wall stuff, and the thing that fixed it was to pull the jumper from the back of the HDD. It fixed the other 2 pc's as well. I was floored. I wasted almost a week trying to figure that out!

If you had to pull the jumpers off the hdd wa probably congigured as the slave, are they now considered masters?
