error 16 inconsistent file system

hi chaps,

yesterday i got the error above. tried to repair the broken packages using another kernel but it didnt finish even though it took the whole night

i've two questions

i. how to fix it if possible. i already tried sudo fsck using the live cd with no success

ii. how to backup my files. ive access to some of them using the cd with others i get the message 'you have no permission...'

any help would be mostly welcome

the smile in the title was a mistake of course...

i dont mind to reinstall linux all i want is to backup my files

is there a way to copy them to windows using the cd and the console. otherwise i get permission denied in most of them

You can use Live Cd for any distribution and boot from it to backup all your data. Ubuntu would be a good choice though but not restricted to it and obviously a personal choice.
But fsck -y should have worked for you in my guess and you should try it once more.

hi, thank you for replying. ive no permission to copy all the files when im logged in with the live cd...

i didnt try with -y, ill do that now

also i can connect to the other kernels but everything is frozen

velouria 04-17-2009 06:56 AM

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck -y
fsck 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)

i can also change session to a safe terminal. is it safe to type fsck there or is there other way to fix it?

Usually fsck is performed on a file system that is not mounted. It would be better if you could perform it in maintenance mode.

can anyone else help?

These links may help you. But they all suggest going into recovery mode and running fsck.
May be instead of Live cd, you could boot into recovery mode from the media of your installed distribution.

hey, thanks for the links. i tried fsck and it didnt work. but its ok i installed a new linux partition and hopefully i could copy my files. i dont know why they were blocked when using the live cd. i had ubuntu 8.04, hope the bug has been fixed...
