Epson LX300 to Linux Mandriva Spring 2008

Hi guys,
I am battling to connect my Epson LX300 Dot Matrix printer to my computer. The program says that it has set up the printer but when I try to print to it either does nothing or prints garbage.

What program are you talking about? What distro?

Have you got Cups installed and configured? Have you tried configuring the printer through Cups?

Here is the information from Openprinting data base for your printer.

I have Mandriva Linux 2008.1.i 586 (Spring Edition)installed: The Full Distribution.

I have got CUPS installed and managed successfully to Print a "Printer Test Page" from it. However when I try to print from say a Text Document it tries to print it twice. This means that it tries to print the same line twice in the same space. Needless to say it looks like garbage.

The Printer being used is a EPSON LX300 Model P850A 9 Pin Dot Matrix Printer. It is a great old Workhorse.

If test page is O.K. ( does not over print ), then I would have a look for some way of turning that off in your application. Its been a long time since I had one of these old work horses, and I have seen the over printing approach used. To make it work well, paper handling has to be very good. I believe the printer will move the paper slightly before the over print, trying to fill in the small spaces between the pin marks. If paper handling is not perfect, you get a mess.

Look for quality settings in your apps, try the lower settings. Hopefully someone else with one of these machines can chime in and help out...
