EPICLY stuffed up my Ubuntu
 

I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

I was compiling an application called Audacious. One of the dependent packages I needed to obtain was called Glib. After installing Glib (and a package it also required), my GNOME began failing and after rebooting the computer, the login GNOME login screem fails to displaying. Does anyone know what's gone wrong?

Now after installing Glib, restart your computer and your GNOME will have failed. Why the F did this happen?

Does anyone have any suggestions how to reverse this damage?

I'm not an Ubuntu user so I won't risk trying to suggest how you fix your system now that it's stuffed. However, I wonder if there's some reason you're trying to install this app by compiling it? Compiling is usually the last resort on Ubuntu, after having exhausted all package-manager resources.

Far as I can tell (from a little searching), Audacious should be in the Ubuntu software repositories. Have a look here:

Hope this helps, though maybe you need to fix the system first. Good luck with that; I also hope someone who does use Ubuntu can help you fix the system.

Hi,

You can test it out by booting a live session of Ubuntu (raw or virtual machine).

Linux distributions seem to be in a mess. If they can't install generic software without braking then Windows will always be the dominate operating system in terms of market share.

That's like replacing some windows core dlls in Vista with ones
from win8 and complaining that Vista is broken. Get a life.

took that personally. While the majority of any userbase is usually new and the "experts" are a minority in comparison you should still leave at least a day or two because not everyone who is posting on this forum is in the same time zone. As in some are asleep while others are awake.

Wow how old are you. Learn to be Greatful! Linux is a Unix clone which Both OS have been proven far more stable, secure then windows will ever be. So you need to get your facts straight.

This is a big community anytime I needed help I've always got a helpful response. But acting the way you are don't expect help.

@mod: please close this thread. His/her issue has been solved here. Further discussion into this subject will just be spam.

Additionally I addressed this hole in the rep system based on this thread.

GLib is an essential part of GNOME and was certainly pre-installed. You must have ovwerwitten it and broke it.
