EPICLY stuffed up my Ubuntu
I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
I was compiling an application called Audacious. One of the dependent packages I needed to obtain was called Glib. After installing Glib (and a package it also required), my GNOME began failing and after rebooting the computer, the login GNOME login screem fails to displaying. Does anyone know what's gone wrong? http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/gnome/sour...2.26.0.tar.bz2 [Glib dependency which is probably going to be requied) http://zlib.net/zlib-1.2.5.tar.bz2 Now after installing Glib, restart your computer and your GNOME will have failed. Why the F did this happen? Does anyone have any suggestions how to reverse this damage? |
Hey there,
I'm not an Ubuntu user so I won't risk trying to suggest how you fix your system now that it's stuffed. However, I wonder if there's some reason you're trying to install this app by compiling it? Compiling is usually the last resort on Ubuntu, after having exhausted all package-manager resources. Far as I can tell (from a little searching), Audacious should be in the Ubuntu software repositories. Have a look here: http://thedailyubuntu.blogspot.com/2...ia-player.html Hope this helps, though maybe you need to fix the system first. Good luck with that; I also hope someone who does use Ubuntu can help you fix the system. |
Wow, just 1 reply... so much for a 'large Linux community'..
Hi, You can test it out by booting a live session of Ubuntu (raw or virtual machine). Linux distributions seem to be in a mess. If they can't install generic software without braking then Windows will always be the dominate operating system in terms of market share. |
That's like replacing some windows core dlls in Vista with ones
from win8 and complaining that Vista is broken. Get a life. Cheers, Tink |
This thread is a duplicate of this thread of which I am *hopefully* answering.
edit: after looking at the timestamp of the threads I think I actually posted in the duplicate. This is the original. I'll leave it up to the mods to decide which to close/merge... confusing. edit edit: I also notice from the above posts there seems to be some attitude flying from the OP about the credibility of the expertise of the community. Understand that the problem you posted is complicated for any user handle without savvy troubleshooting skills. How about giving the community a couple of days to reply before freaking out on us. I say that because I... Quote:
Just putting in my 2 cents. At any rate I'll continue working with the OP in the other thread unless a mod deems otherwise and merges it into this thread. |

This is a big community anytime I needed help I've always got a helpful response. But acting the way you are don't expect help. |

GLib is an essential part of GNOME and was certainly pre-installed. You must have ovwerwitten it and broke it.
