Entering quote characters in Mandriva?

I just installed Mandriva LE2005, and turned on the Use unicode by default option while installing it. I dont know if this is really the reason, but what is happening is that I can no longer enter many characters on the keyboard. For example, if I hit the single quote (apostrophe) key once, nothing happens. If I hit it twice, I get the following character which is not the same thing. Same with the double-quotes (It inserts if I hit it twice), and the tilde (~), and the backquote(`).
Hey wait , theres more to this: If I type the letters [i][t][apostrophe][s] (the contraction for it is), I get the following: itś -- an accent on the s. In fact, it is the same with the other characters.
Now, how do I turn off this accents feature/bug? I cant program without the quotes characters.
I tried localedrake (both as my username and as root) and turning off the Use unicode by default thing, but it doesnt work.
Can anyone please help?

Thanks a lot

P.S: I looked at the preview of this post and it is even weirder than I thought. The character I get when I press the apostrophe twice at least looks like one on my machine, but it looks quite different in the HTML like this ´

Just a "wild guess", but maybe your ' and " keys are declared as dead keys. I can't really help further...

I got it!

Oh nevermind everyone, I fixed it. Turns out the keyboard layout was set to "US (International)" instead of to "US", and this included the "feature" of being able to type accented characters by 'a, etc. (BTW, in the meantime, I had figured out that typing an apostrophe followed by a space was the right way to get an apostrophe).
I changed the layout to US, and it works fine now.
