Enlightenment on DSL 2.4 - No desktop
 

I just recently installed Damn Small Linux 2.4 on an older machine of mine. I don't care too much for the Fluxbox WM, so I used apt-get to get Enlightenment 16 (dsl 2.4 has an option to enable apt-get). The installation was a sucess, it even automatically switched the default for me so I dont have to manually edit the file.

There is one, major problem though. When everything boots up, I am looking at an empty desktop. My menus are also empty, besides the Enlighenment settings (witch include nothing for adding menu buttons or icons) The only things that are functunal are the virtual desktops, and the other little box (i forget what its called, its where your programs go when you minimize them).

Does anyone know how I can get my programs either as desktop icons, or add them into the menu (GAIM, Mozilla, GIMP, Audacity, Hydrogen, etc)? I am lost, I cant figure it out. I have spent hours trying to do it, but with no sucess. Im pretty sure that I have to add lines in a file somewhere, but I cant find the file, and none of the online tutorials seem to help.

If someone knows it, or uses DSL+Enlightenment, can you just copy/paste the code for me? All I really need is to know where its at and what the structure of it is, thenI can do the rest from there.

I've never used Enlightenment before, but if you can't solve the problem, there are alternatives such as XFCE and IceWM.

I chose enlightenment for its size, and looks. Its a really small package, and it looks really good.

I am doing this on an old computer (pentium 2 266MHz, 128ram, 1.1GB hard drive) so im pretty limited to how much space i can take up with the WM. KDE and Gnome are out of the question, I cant even download the entire Gnome package and fit it on my drive, and I doubt KDE will fit either, let alone run on the old comp

I installed Enlightenment once, and was presented with pretty much the same thing. After a bit I managed to get it to do a few things, but decided I didn't really have time to mess with it, and purged it.

I'm pretty sure you will be able to get it working, tho. It shouldn't be any different on DSL, than any other distro. Have you checked here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/The_Uno...r's_Manual

I have been trying various bare-bones window managers, including enlightenment. So far, I have the impression that you have to do some manual editing of configuration files. Research only starting, however.....
