Encrypted FS Partition Scheme?

I am planning on setting up a partition scheme with an encrypted partition, and I was wondering as to how I would go about setting it up.

Say I chose to make hda1 /boot and hda2 the encrypted partition mounted as /...

Exactly how would I go about using the system? My guess is that it would boot off /boot, but would it prompt me for the password to mount hda2 during the boot sequence? Would I need to put any files on the /boot partition to allow it to do so (like mount or something of the like)?
