Assuming you have all the correct packages installed, you edit /etc/inittab to resemble the line below:

Quote:
id:5:initdefault:
This sets the runlevel of the machine to 5.

If you do not have the correct packages installed, then do a:

Quote:
yum groupinstall general-desktop

RHEL6
i am guessing 6.0 and not the current 6.3

first did you buy the required server license
it IS required and NOT cheep
https://www.redhat.com/wapps/store/catalog.html
the Standard 1 year is $ 799 PER year every year

now there is a "desktop " install license
but NOT for use as a server ,that one is $299 / year
https://www.redhat.com/apps/store/desktop/

so for RHEL6
1)
buy the license
2)
the VERY first stop for a question SHOULD be the red hat knowledge base - search
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/search
( loging in to red hat is REQUIRED - as in a paid for license.)

---- if you ARE NOT going to buy the required license , do NOT use RHEL !!!---
instead install one of the free rebuilds
CentOS 6.2
ScientificLinux 6.2
and install the desktop at time of install

----------- if you DO have a paid for rhn license -------
then on a server you normally DO NOT install a gui- it is a very big security risk

pop in the install dvd and choose "upgrade an existing install"
add gnome desktop to the install

or

Code:
su -
yum update
yum groupinstall "X Window System" Desktop
that will install gnome
BUT you must have a paid for license to do that
see the install instructions
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...ide/index.html
