Angry Embedded ProSavage8 3D Graphics help

I have purchased a cheapo pc to learn about Linux. I have installed Red hat 9 and then discovered the issues regarding Savage video cards. As a newbie, I have searched the net for solutions, and while there seems to be several on offer, I lack the basics to carry out some of the suggestions.
At present I am able access the command line functions and understand that I can change settings in the XF86Config which may help.
How do I do this?
Is there a default basic video setting that I can apply that will give me basic video and allow me to access Xwindows?

I am begining to lose my hair
