If you're not running an infected windows-PC as well as a Linux box,
and if your Linux box is directly connected, there's a good chance
that you're running an open relay on your machine. If your IP is
black-listed as a spam-source, find out WHY.

Cheers,
Tink

OTOH burleydurls may be using an ISP which has a blacklisted IP address range, perhaps because of spamming activity by other users of the same ISP. As a customer of the Indian national carrier, BSNL, there are a few websites that block my even browsing them, never mind posting.

@OP
To check if your box is an open relay go here
To see if your IP is blacklisted and maybe the reason and how you can remove it, check this out.

Re the open relay: what bathory said.

But I'd like to understand the set-up at your place
better; you're connected to the internet how? When you
set-up the new port number - did you enable port forwarding
for SMTP to your Linux box?

Cheers,
Tink

It may be that burleydurls' ISP assigns public IP addresses dynamically and that the offending usage that made ntlworld.com/virginmedia block emails was by another customer of burleydurls' ISP when they were using the IP address that is assigned to burleydurls now.

@burleydurls: it might be interesting for you to see what your public IP address is and whether it changes when you turn off you Internet connection, leave it off for a ~10 minutes and then turn it back on. http://checkip.dyndns.org is one of many sites that will tell you your public IP address.
