email passwords in mysql?

How can I make the email passwords be stored and used in a MySQL database rather than etc/passwd?

I've been looking for days around the web and I've found sites hinting that this is possible, but none even hinting at how, let alone explaining how...

Well squirrelmail is an imap client so you must be running imap as well as pop. Can you post the output of:
netstat -nlp

I've never tried this with UW IMAP and looking at the extensive FAQ there is no mention of it:
http://www.washington.edu/imap/IMAP-FAQs/index.html

You can definately do it with courier though and there are good docs and howtos on the postfix website.

Ok! thanks, I'll check into those (courier/postfix), maybe I can install one of them instead, or at least learn how it basically works*L*
