Emacs: Tips for running python code within emacs

Hello all,
Im trying emacs for a change to do some python coding, I tried various searches and found http://venkys-dotplan.blogspot.com/2...emacs-and.html very helpful(although this is 22.x specific and I'm using gemacs 23.1.1), every thing is working fine like auto indent etc. but I'm not getting python prompt using C-c C-z(Task-2).

These are messages in my message window:

Loading 00debian-vars...
No /etc/mailname. Reverting to default...
Loading 00debian-vars...done
Loading /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50dictionaries-common.el (source)...

Loading /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50yasnippet.el (source)...done
For information about GNU Emacs and the GNU system, type C-h C-a.
File mode specification error: (void-variable python-mode-map)

Closes block: elif guess<number:

Saving file /home/crap/program/python/if.py...

whenever Im opening a *.py file I receive this(highlighted) message is there some thing wrong in python mode, by the way Im on Mint box and installed YaSnippet, pymacs and ropemacs through package manager.

and manually edited .emacs file for auto indenting and it looks like:

(put 'upcase-region 'disabled nil)
(add-hook 'python-mode-hook '(lambda () (define-key python-mode-map "\C-m" 'newline-and-indent)))

I'm little lost so i need tips or links specific to emacs 23.x
