emacs problems and USB issues

I've been trying to install emacs 21.3 in SuSE 9.0 but after the ./configure command I get the following error message:

congifure: error: no acceptable cc path found in $PATH

The installation instructions didn't specify a particular dirctory in which the installation files had to be un-tarred. Any ideas?
I want to use it edit fstab so I can get my memory stick working. It seems to have detected it but the entry in /etc/fstab currently says:

/dev/sda4 auto sync,noauto,user,exec 0 0 #HOTPLUG B3Fu/vd1tuzTT19

I've been googling away but not much joy. SuSE website says nowt and I couldn't find anything similar on this forum (most people seem to be having problems further down the line than me!)
Other than that it's all great. Hoping to dispense with XP soon. Yay!

Oh. Marvellous.
I really don't want to have to use vi.
