emacs cannot connect to X server

When I su to the root user and then switch back, emacs no longer opens. I get the following message:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

It works again if I log out and log back in, but that is becoming a pain. Does anyone know what causes this and if there is a solution other than logging out?

Two questions: are you doing all this in a full-screen
console or in an X session?
And the switching back ...
do you do
su
su <user>

or
su
exit
?

Cheers,
Tink
