Eee PC USB permission and disconnet problems

I am not experienced in linux and am not a programmer of any sorts.
I plug my the memory stick in the USB and I can read it but I can't right click to disconnect and when I look at properties I see that I don't have ownership or permission on the memory stick.
I need help and I am nervous about doing more damage. I have seen postings with long codes to write but I don't even know where to begin.
Thanks

If you did not save any files to the USB drive then you can just unplug it.
If you did write new files to the drive then you should wait a few seconds to be sure they have been completely saved and then unplug.
If you feel the need to be very, very sure then shutdown the OS and unplug the drive after the computer has powered down.
USB drives are meant to be "hot swappable", meaning they are auto-mounted when plugged in and auto-unmounted when unplugged.

That is such an easy solution, I should have asked hours ago.
Thank you.
