"(EE) No devices detected" , Driver name - Debian error
 

I replaced Fedora 5 with Debian yesterday, because Fedora doesn't have alot of stuff and noticed stuff i was trying to wasn't supported in fedora.

So after i reboot it comes up in the command line to login, i do and it stays in command line. Looking at the linux pardon with window, and random luck, i saw several things that indicated that there was the graphic user interface thing.

I asked a friend at school about it(hes a linux genius and carries several live cd with him all the time O_o). He said to type in startx

i get home and try it and i get an error. I look at the log in windows and search to quick find http://lists.debian.org/debian-lapto.../msg00005.html

i look in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and find this.

im not shure if i enterd something wrong on install, since i didn't really know what i was doing.

My computer is an eMachine w3115
Chipset: NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100
(as Emachines sucks, there isn't even a page for the computer)


is that the right driver name, as i belive nv = NVIDIA
I can edit any files with windows if needed. Thanks for anyones help in advance.

:p linux abilitys = low(i guess i can do more than other people, but thats computer experince and a higher iq than most people)

Try typing xorgconfig or xf86config at the command line. If everything's fine, it should let you configure your X server (X Window System - GUI (Graphical User Interface))

edit: it dident work T.T, i got the same error message "no devices detected"

i realised you can't upload T.T, well im not shure what to do now

Trouble most likely is that Debian Sarge (stable) which you installed probably doesn't recognize your video card. if you update the pci.ids file it may be able to then recognize the card properly. http://pciids.sourceforge.net/ download the latest file and put it in /usr/share/misc/ and try to reconfigure your graphics using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86


Alternately you could install Debian Etch (testing) which is more up to date and will be the new stable version in a month or so. Which would be my recommendation.. Use the latest netinstall.iso http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
In Etch the command to reconfigure the graphics card would be dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just so you know..

still same error, im gona ask my friend if he can lend me one if his install cds (can't rember how to spell name of distribution).

Debian Stable is pretty old .. Did you try installing with Debian Etch ? I would bet it will solve your problem.. onyl a 100MB download for the install ISO during install it will grab the rest of the files it needs over your broadband connection.
