Unhappy EE: Fatal server error: no screens found

hi
i have been (just) using ubuntu for a few months now. Recently I swapped my laptop with my brothers. His is a newly bought dell vostro1500. I installed ubuntu8.04 and had been working on it for a week now.
I decided to give a go for debian, and i got a debian4.0r0 dvd from my friend here.
After installing I dint get the Xserver running giving the error message as "Fatal server error:no screens found"
I did some google on this, and mostly I have found hi-fi(for me,as i am a newbie) stuff.
I dont know where to start from. Can someone guide me and tell me what are the informations needed?

My laptop is running intel core2duo processor and is having nvidia graphics card. I am giving this piece of info because I saw these points being discussed often (though I dint understand much, cos they were too technical)

Thanks.
Pal..!

Nvidia drivers.

Did you install the nvidia drivers. If you need the GUI you may be able to set the video driver to vesa to get it limping but running.
