editing XF86Config from command line
 

I am very much a newbie to linux and I am having trouble with my monitor and I cannot start X. I believe it is because of incorrect freq settings in XF86Config. I now have the correct freq ranges for my monitor but I do not know how to edit XF86Conifig from the command line.
I am running Mandrake 9.1 on a intel machine.

You may use emacs or you may use vi.

If you purchased your distro, both of these are documented in the users manual they provided.

You do need to log in as root.

I used vi to edit that file so my nVidia driver install would take. Read the man page on vi so you know the basic keyboard commands; once you do it's a cool little editor.

After reading the errors given when I started X I realizied that my real problem was that in the XF86Config-4 file there was a section Screen2 that was referring to a Monitor2 that didn't exist. So after learning the very basics of vi from a book i got at the library ("Learning the Vi Text Editor"); I removed all occurences of Screen2 in that file and now everything works just fine. Except that I have no idea on how to get my ISA AWE64 sound card to work. Again thanks for the help.
