editing the etc/fstab

I want my red hat 9.0 system to automatically mount the drive wehn i start up so i don't have to mount -t every time. this is my music hd. I know i need to edit /etc/fstab to make it work and i can see what i have to do but it won't let me edit anything in there. anything i am doing wrong here?

You have to be logged in as root.

To gain root privilages in a terminal:

Code:

su -

Make sure the file is actually writable as well.

it's writable as well. i don't understand it b/c when i open it i can put my cursor where i want to add things but it doesn't let me

ok hold on? when you say "you put your cursor" what do you mean by this?? what text editor/program are you using? graphical or text mode?

Are you just clicking on the file in konqueror? Or opening the file using a console text editor like emacs or vi?

If just clicking on the file name in a browser does not open the file for editing. Right click on the file, select open with and select an editor.

And we have a winner. i was just double clicking on the folder and trying to edit it when i was already in. That answered the ? though. thanks

Shed your Windows habits. In linux, its not best to "just double click things"
