Editing menu

I can't seem to edit my menu to add a program I just installed. I searched everywhere in these forums and tried a bunch of suggestions, but they either didn't work or just confused the hell out of me. I am using GNOME. I want to be able to just go to applications:/// and add a new launcher. I tried enabling menu editing, as such:

(as root)
cd /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules
mv default-modules.conf default-modules.conf.without-menu-editing
cp default-modules.conf.with-menu-editing default-modules.conf

I am at a loss. How can it be this hard to do something as simple as edit a menu?!?!

Chris
