Editing Boot Options
 

When booting into Mandriva 2008 I have several options. They appear to be kernel versions, but i'm not sure why they are there. This is what my options are:

Boot Mandriva 2008
Boot Mandriva 2008 (Safe Mode)
Boot Microsoft Windows
windows1
desktop586 2.6.22.9-1
desktop586 2.6.22.18-1
2.6.22.9-1

Any idea on why there are so many entries and/or how I should go about removing them (if I should at all). As far as I can tell there should only be the first three, right?

What should or shouldn't be there depends on what's actually on your system ;)

If there's only Mandriva, you might have left some Win partition (possibly FAT32?) left on your system for whatever purpose. On installation, Mandriva tried to make sense of that - which, well, it probably didn't. The desktopXXX-something entries refer to different kernels, as well as the last line - I don't know if that comes from a kernel update, but that's most certainly the case if you used older installation media. You can a) safely remove all unwanted entries and b) even remove the old kernel (or any single one as long as you keep a functional one) in case you don't need it...

I'm assuming that Mandriva's using GRUB as a boot loader. Look for /boot/grub/menu.lst (as root) and edit it to your liking - simply delete all entries you don't intend to use (or even better, comment them out by putting a # in front of every line you don't want to get displayed.

Thanks for the reply. I should have specified that i do dual boot Windows. I will be completely free of it once i get WoW working in Cedega. I'm going to back everything up later today then i'll start removing the old entries. Thanks again for the info.

I'd leave the first three and second-to-last entry intact then - because this one points to the fact that there's a newer kernel aboard than the one you seem to use currently (as far as your sig goes...).
