Editing .bash_profile

Hey there,

I'm following an online tutorial to get the Java JDK installed, i'm nearly done, but i have to add the following lines to my .bash_profile

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_06
PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

I've opened it using gedit, and i'm presented with:

# .bash_profile

# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi

# User specific environment and startup programs

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin

export PATH
unset USERNAME

Now this might seem silly, but what lines do i have to edit? What should the file look like when i'm finished and how do i go about saving?

You need to add that "export ..." line to the file and then you need to add "$JAVA_HOME/bin" (without quotes) to your PATH line, so it looks like

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/bin

I don't have gedit on my system, but surely it can't be that hard to find out how to save? There should be a "Save" button on the toolbar, or at least an option to save in the File menu..

For saving in gedit. On the tool bar there is a save icon. If you do not have the tool bar turned on, use the file drop down menu, save then quit.
