E576: viminfo: Missing '>' in line:


I got this error when i create a new file with vi editor as well as close the opened file.

This means there is an error in the viminfo file, maybe due to a bug. Whatever the reason be, you can try to delete the file $HOME/.viminfo and start vim again. You will lose some information about recent history and usage, anyway. More details, here.

Check the path where file is being created, may be your userid did not have acess for the specifield location.
Go to home directory and then run vi with new file name.

reinstall vim

Your viminfo.vim file somehow got screwed up. It's very hard for me to tell what's wrong with it (I had another error), but the fix is quite easy...

Do the following from a 'root' console:
1) apt-get remove vim
2) rm -fR /usr/share/vim
3) apt-get install vim

this will regenerate all the syntax rule files in vim/vimXX/syntax (including viminfo.vim), and your problem will be solved!
