DVD writer with GRUB

Hi

I know there are lots of threads in here for how to install a CD-R DVD-RW but I can't find out how to configure IDE-SCSI emulation on a GRUB booting machine.

I have a Redhat Linux 8 machine and
Redhat now make GRUB the default boot option.

The DVD-RW is an AOPEN DVD +RW/+R

Works beautifully to play both CDs and DVDs - in fact it worked perfectly to install the system from DVD but having real troubles trying to get to set it up to write DVDs - just want to use it as a backup device so only want to write files to it.

Can anybody help please?

Thanks

Joy

Did you try:
Code:
man grub
man grub.conf
Look here

That was the top 2nd hit in the following
google search

Cheers,
Tink

Hi

Thanks for your response.

Yes tried the man pages - and the manuals - doesn't actually make a lot of sense though.

Thing is, though I am a Linux newbie I am not a UNIX newbie but neither am I in any way or sense a programmer.

We have all these wonderful super easy installation modules now but they don't do anything as basic as setting up an IDE CD-R for you. I currently only use Linux on servers - though I am going to be delving into Linux on a couple of desktops at home in the next couple of days - but really I can see where a lot of this frustration comes from - some things just are difficult to set up.

Thanks for your help again though

/etc/boot/grub.conf
Find where it specifies boot options and add hdX=ide-scsi where hdX is your dvd-drive

Hi thanks for the reply

I think this has now worked, though I still haven't got my cd-r dvd-r working as yet, I have made the change you recommend.

I don't know what is going through Redhat's mind at the moment but of course the files aren't where you said even though I just did an out of the box standard server install. If anyone else using Redhat 8 wants to do this the file is available in two places /etc/grub.conf and /boot/grub/grub.conf. This is the same file with a symbolic link to /etc/grub.conf.

Thanks again.

Now to work out the rest of the puzzle.
