Thumbs up DVD writer broken: Lun appears to be stuck writing LBA or LBH=410h? Solution

Have you ever encountered this? You have downloaded your favourite new Linux distro onto your big usb stick also newly purchased, and you put that new DVD RW into the slot and let her rip. Everything seems to be going along just fine, and then you see the dreadful message:

"Lun appears to be stuck writing LBH=410h"

So you think that it might be unable to write from the USB stick? So you try to copy the entire distro to your handy harddrive, and after the long wait, it is finally ready to go. You change the source location for the write to your local harddrive, and now you think it is going to work. Everything seems to be going fine, then you see the same dreadful message:

"Lun appears to be stuck writing LBA=410h"

So you do a search on Google, and at first find nothing. So you try some different DVD writing software settings. You try and you try. Same message. You search again, and find someone suggesting to use the command line:

growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=2 -Z /dev/hdc=/path/to/distro.iso

Now you think that you've got it licked. You wait with eager anticipation! Only to see the same thing:

"Lun appears to be stuck writing LBA=410h"

trying again in 140ms. If you are lucky, the console doesn't get into an endless loop and stops on its own. Control C doesnt break it. Finding the process and killing it doesn't stop its loop. Closing the console seems to the only way.

So you try different settings, see that your current distro uses mkisofs and read the man pages for it, and try different options. Then you try various DVD writers again, K3B and add user parameters to the calls. It is calling growisofs anyway, right? You try brasero, you try and you try. Same message. You try speed 0, as one man page suggests. You try DAO, incremental, and keep trying. By now, you are giving up.

You know that it can't be the DVD media because you have been using it repeatedly on your DVD writer. You think that the DVD writer must be gone, and you pull out the money to get a new one. Then, you have an idea. Could it be? After all the frustration? All the effort? You look for the DVD cleaner kit. Then you remember that you didn't buy one. Too expensive. You remove the DVD and open it up, and then try some rubbing alcohol on the lens, wipe it off. Lint free cloth? Didn't buy that either, too expensive you say. You wait for it to dry. Then, like some kind of Linux magic, you put it back together and put it in, and....it just works. Linux to the rescue.
