DVD ripping in linux?

Has anyone successfully done any dvd ripping in linux ? If so could you post what programs or procedures you used? Ive already tried dvd rip and transcode but cant get it to work. The problem is dvd rip keeps telling me to install transcode even though I already have. So is there another way or how do I get dvd rip to recognize transcode is installed?

stuff transcode completely, and all that other junk. Instead get VERY excited about MPlayer, which contains a dvd stream ripper, mencoder, that is VERY fast and good and simple to use. it'll encode to a divx only at the moment but that's what you want anyway... you want the libdvdread 0.9 and libdvdcss 0.3 libraries installed (NOT libdvdcss 1+) which you can get the info from from the ogle website. mencoder can be a bit awkward to compile, as it will only compile if you have libmp3lame properly installed and another one.. not sure what, but the ./configure output will give plenty of info. You've got the issue of not being able to use gcc-2.96 but that's easy enough to replace.

Oh and it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more reliable (maybe not quite as versatile ni some ways) as that nasty nasty Flask thing

Take a look at the dvd::rip Perl module from http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/

nah that's rubbish, insists on cahcing the entire dvd to drive for even thinking about encoding it, well it did last time i tried it. that cluster mode looks pretty clever tho

It does, but the end results are excellent.

Thanx for the link acid Ill try that. The libdvdread and the other file you mentioned are they the same ones that come with Xine? I have Xine running on my system already so does this mean I already have them installed?

yes, like i said though, you want to be very careful about not using libdvdcss 1.0, as it's REALLY naff and is so slow... the authors maintain that it's better, but i know first hand how much faster and more reliable 0.3 is, as do the mplayer authors...

Where did he say he wanted a divx? If he wants to make a dvd backup then this wont work will it?
