DVD rippers
Are there any good DVD rippers and encoders out for Linux?
|
Hi
Dont know if theres any other DVD rippers and/or encoders out there but im using the program k3b to do it, it uses transcode. Azael |
i would easily recommend mplayer over transcode for encoding, transcode is a very scary looking beast consisting of 10 or so little programs, which are very cryptic to use. meanwhile mplayer's mencoder is one program, and very straightfoward IF YOU READ THE DOCS! :) i presume that what you really want is just a window to pop up and you can press GO! well it's not quite like that under linux, there is dvd:rip which uses transcode and my very own acidrip http://acidrip.thitrythreeandathird.net which uses mencoder. there are some others but i long gave u ptrying to use them.
incase you can't guess mencoder and transcode are console utilities... |
:D Perfect, let me get your acidrip and will give a try this weekend.
And youre right transcode was a nightmare to complile, lotsa stuff required. Azael |
i'd be delighted to get any feedback about it, it's only been around a few weeks, and i've not had any feedback at all yet.

Is your link correct? Im trying to connect but i received "site could not be found"
|
Ok i managed to find your site and dowloaded lsdvd, but cant find acidrip on sourceforge page :(
|
ahh yeah thymox said there were no files... i guess i deleted the wrong ones! doh.. they're all up now.

Bah! Acid i dunno if i screwed something or not but this is what happens.
I installed a slack .tgz of libdvdread, then made and installed lsdvd, then followed your INSTALL file for acidrip, did perl Makefile.PL without problems, make without problems, make test spat out "No tests defined for AcidRip extension." I went on to make install anyway, did it. Then when i try to run acidrip i get "Can't locate Gtk.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/AcidRip/interface.pm line 1. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/AcidRip/interface.pm line 1. Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/AcidRip/acidrip.pm line 7. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/AcidRip/acidrip.pm line 7. Compilation failed in require at /usr/bin/acidrip line 11. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/acidrip line 11." It's all on slack 8.1 Any clues, did i screw up something? I borrowed this DVD i would like to rip, obviously with your Acidrip but its in japanese, and has a option for english subtitles. Can acidrip rip it with english subtitles? Thanks for any help, and sorry if i dont respond before monday, i'll be away from home. Thanks again for Acidrip -NSKL |
right... you'll need gtk-perl to be installed... the Makefile.PL should complain about it, did it not? that's nothing to do with me, the checks for that are already in place. Hmm, i just took gtk-perl off and it gave the same errors as you, but didn't complain in the Makefile.PL stage... odd...
And yes there are no tests for it, i guess i should write some! subtitles, should be no problem at all. |
Ok, i got Gtk-Perl installed, run acidrip and...
It worked. Well actually it only starts up, and everything looks good. I have no time to try it this moment but i will let you know by tomorrow. Thanks for help Ok, i tried it, and when i instert a dvd disc and press the RELOAD button it sais "This Disc" and under it (tree view thing) "Not Found". I tried several discs and tried top do it as root too. No luck, always sais "Not Found" Any help? BTW, are you in any way related to that other moderator, DavidPhillips (are you the same person?) or is it just a coincidence? Thanks again -NSKL |
hmm, does "lsdvd" work? do you need to set the device properly?
no, no relation, i did once ask him if he was my dad, but he said he wasn't... |
--(Mon Oct 21, 17:08:36)--(root@SlackBox:/usr/src/lsdvd-0.2)# lsdvd
Segmentation fault --(Mon Oct 21, 17:08:39)--(root@SlackBox:/usr/src/lsdvd-0.2)# I guess that answers the question... ./configure, make and make install went without problems for lsdvd but it still segfaults. It's on Slack 8.1 Do you have any idea how to find out why it segfaults? I tried downloading it again and installing anew but it segfaulted again. Any way to fix this? I would really like to try out Acidrip so i can help you out in a way as well, if theres no way to fix this problem, is there another DVD ripper worth trying? Thanks -NSKL |
hmm that sucks, i'd appreciate it if you could run it under gdb and run "bt f" as and when it segfaults. that sucks.
mencoder itself is a superb ripper, it just doesn't use a gui, which i personally prefer, unless i'm in a rush.... |
I dunno how to use gdb, but if you tell me how, or point me to a quick how-to i will gladly do it.
So are you saying i can use mencoder to rip the dvd with subtitles? Thanks again... when slack 9 comes out i will upgrade my comp, and try acid rip again and let you know. -NSKL |
