DVD player
Hi
I am really a newbie. Finally found out how to turn it on . When I try to play a dvd,it says I need a plugin,Please help,I don`t want to go back to windows. |
Which DVD player is this?
Which distribution is this? Have you searched for information about how to play DVDs in your distribution? Generally: Movie DVDs are encrypted and are keyed to a particular zone. Your DVD hardware must be set up to play DVDs in the same zone as the disk you want to play (i.e. USA=zone 1, NZ= zone4, guess who set up this "zone" system?) and your player must be capable of decrypting the DVD. You need to check one and find out how to install the other to your player. It would really help folk help you if you would edit your profile to display your location and distro (see mine to the left of this message?) (Aside: there's a space after each comma, and no space in front of a period.) |

You say you're using Ubuntu... Need to know what version of Ubuntu you're using... Most likely its one of the following two. If you're using 6.06 Dapper Drake... Reference 6.22 in the Dapper FAQ http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper If you're using 6.10 Edgy Eft, Ref. 1.6.4.2 http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy IGF |

I believe it is the 6.06 it is not the newest one that is still in testing stage. Thanks for the help |

If you have any questions on the version of Linux you're using... (Assuming you're using Gnome, I'm not sure where it is in KDE/Kubuntu) Click System/About Ubuntu It'll be on one of the first lines... Example.... "Thank you for your interest in Ubuntu 6.10 -the Edgy Eft- released in October 2006. or it may something about "6.06 Dapper Drake LTS".... Hope that helps.. IGF |
Regardless of Dapper or Edgy...
You need to install the Codecs in order to play your DVDs. They are not included with Linux by default because of licensing issues. If you go to a site called EasyUbuntu and follow the instructions you will be able to install these Codecs. It will work with either Dapper or Edgy.

Thats certainly an easy way to do it, but I prefer Automatix2 to Ubuntu. installs more programs, easier to set up, etc.(I had a heckuva time with EasyUbuntu)... http://getautomatix.com IGF |
Heh - and me: I'm more of a traditionalist and distrust third party auto-installers which hide what they are doing until they actually do it. I'm also leery of the element of "social engineering" present in these things... a kind of "please run this script as root to optimize your Linux"... enough folk get used to that, it could be used to load trojans.
I'd personally suggest the Ubuntu Guide Wiki... possibly one of the best linux howto sites anywhere. Not just for this, but because it helps you understand what is going on. http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy |
