DVD playback
 

Hey guys. I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 on my laptop.
Here is a brief spec:

Packard Bell EasyNote E3 242
AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ Barton
256Mb DDR PC2100 SODIMM
40Gig hard drive
DVD/CDRW Drive
ENE Flash memory port
Realtek Audio
VIA KN266 ProSavageDDR Video Chipset.

I'm having problems with DVD playback. I've tried using all the movie players built into Mandrake, and i keep getting lines round the edges of the stuff on the screen.. It looks as tho its interlaced and looks terrible.. i can make out what everything is, but this is annoying me. Is there a way to correct this problem? I have the probo S3 driver installed.

Hope someone can help me with this...

What DVD players are you using? In Mplayer there's an option for deinterlacing, and in Xine you just press i to set deinterlacing on. Not sure about the line round the side though

i'd like to use Xine, heard it was the best one to use. Can you or anyone advise on the best settings to get the best display and sound results please??

I agree with acid_kewpie, mplayer is the best. It is easiest to install using plf repositories found at: http://plf.zarb.org

After it is installed, just type "man mplayer" to read up on all the many options you have for playback.

Not sure, but xine usually comes without de-encription tools such libdvdcss.
Did you installed them?

I installed all the packages associated with it.. when i clicked Xine to install, it bought up a dialogue box saying install this such and such.. so naturally, like any other person new to linux, just clicked yes lol

I can't seem to get rid of the interlacing on both programs, and i dont have OpenGL as a driver option in the list of Video Drivers to use, so i picked Xv, maybe im doing something totally wrong.

Interlacing is caused by Xine, not libdvdcss - it will often interlace even with everything installed. What happens when you press "i" during a dvd?

it makes it blocky sort of... but i think that mite be because of the tft screen.. but then again mite be not coz it dont do it in windows..

Xine is replaying the video correctly. The problem is your computer monitor is a non-interlaced display, while your television is an interlaced display. The image would look fine replayed on a television screen. De-interlacing is a software process to try and remove the tearing you see from motion in interlaced video on a non-interlaced screen. The quality of that depends on how much motion there is in the video, and the software filter used to try and de-interlace it.

thank you for the details m_yates. So its my monitor thats causing the problem then! de-interlacing makes it look alot worse tho lol.

Another thing, i just read my XF86Config file, and there's no mention of AGP anywhere on it.... and XFdrak says my card is on a PCI bus. Is this normal? Does it mean my card is detected as PCI? if so, how do i enable agp??
