dvd drive doesn't show up in os of rebuilt pc

Hi,

My dvd drive opens and closes and shows up in the bios when i attach a hard drive that isn't working!!

Can you figure out what i should do?

and is the OS the ubuntu 10.4 in your info?

with 169 posts , you should know that you NEED to add things like YOUR hardware specs !!

and post MORE than " it is not working"

Sorry if I annoyed you. I always try to be succinct and leave out superfluous info.

I will try to tell you everthing that's relevant. I have two problems that I thought would best be dealt with separately.

# I have rebuilt my pc with new parts; ie a mobo 'bundle' GeForce6 100 PM-M2 retaining my existing SATA drive with my os and data on it. The first 2 times i booted up I think it beeped twice, which I understand means ok in some sys. -But the black display had a message - i don't remember what, leading me to think it couldn't mount my drive. On the third boot there was no beeps and a new black display message:


Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press enter.

I could feel my hd wasn't vibrating; - which it will do when i access it from another pc. When I enter the bios, I see SATA 1 and the vacant SATA 2-4 marked undetected. Along with IDE slave, while, the Primary Master detects my DVD drive.


# When I remove my SATA drive and add what i believe is called an IDE drive, the pc goes ahead and loads a copy of Ubuntu 10.04. but the DVD no longer appears in the bios nor shows up in my os.

superfluous info. -- is one thing BUT ( yes cap) BUT a NEW and different nvidia chip AND and new mobo with out REINSTALLING fedora 13 ( your info states ubuntu 10.4)

you do know that the nvidia6 chips are soon to go to legacy/unsupported support the gf 5 series is almost unsupported( and was for 2 months )

did you reinstall a correct akmod-nvidia for that chip ???
did you black list the nouveau driver IF you are using the ( kmod-nvidia,akmod-nidia,and nvidia???.run)

the above CAUSED this
posting the /var/log/boot.0.log error massage would have helped greatly

that was that there was NO driver for the gf6 chip
( knowing that even without the massage would have helped in the FIRST post

I certainly didn't know my new parts were almost redundant now, and I will complain to the vendor. Thank you for telling me. However this rebuild has gone ahead and loaded Ubuntu 10.04 on an old IDE drive. I had forgotten my preferred SATA drive offers me the choice of Fedora 13 or Ubuntu 10.04 on the GRUB menu and didn't know it would complicate things. You have asked a number of 'technical' questions I didn't expect to arise. I must have got lucky the first time I rebuilt a pc. I was happy with the performance of my old one and only bought the new parts because someone in the community told me I would soon have to.

I wonder if you might offer your opinion as to what I should ask the vendor for with a view to longevity instead of 'new parts'.

you probably have a year to two before the gforce 6 series hits "end of life" the 5 might in 2011
the gforce 4 and older did 6 months ago
