superfluous info. -- is one thing BUT ( yes cap) BUT a NEW and different nvidia chip AND and new mobo with out REINSTALLING fedora 13 ( your info states ubuntu 10.4)
-- it NOT "superfluous info."
you do know that the nvidia6 chips are soon to go to legacy/unsupported support the gf 5 series is almost unsupported( and was for 2 months )
did you reinstall a correct akmod-nvidia for that chip ???
did you black list the nouveau driver IF you are using the ( kmod-nvidia,akmod-nidia,and nvidia???.run)
the above CAUSED this
-But the black display had a message - i don't remember what, leading me to think it couldn't mount my drive.
posting the /var/log/boot.0.log error massage would have helped greatly
" i don't remember what, leading me to think it couldn't mount my drive"
that was that there was NO driver for the gf6 chip
( knowing that even without the massage would have helped in the FIRST post
