Duel Boot XP With Linux Booting From Slave Drive

Hi,
i Am going to duel boot linux and need some help. i have Windows XP in a 40gb HDD Partitioned Into 2 20gb HDD's (C:,D: or Hda1, Hda5) with Windows XP in D: Hda5 On Marster, And a blank 20Gb HDD On Slave. My Question is that i am going to install mandrake 9.2 (Marster Dissconneted During Install Process) on the blank 20Gb Hdd and put GRUB in the 20gb's MBR then when compleated set the bios to boot off the 20gb (still on slave) with GRUB and add This code to GRUB For Windows XP,
> title Windows XP
> rootnoverify (hda1,0) //or Hda5 Not sure
> chainloader +1
Can you tell me if this will work Thanks,

P.S Sorry If this has been asked all ready but it didn't look like it had.

I don't think you'll be able to get it to boot from the slave drive...MBR is on the primary master.

Just Cheeked with my Motherboard Manual. My Bios Can Be Set to Read the MBR of different HDD on any channel or jumper setting.

I do this with my comp. at work... 2nd HDD, EXT2 with RH9 on it. Primary is on a SATA w/W2K. It doesn't even know about the Linux install - whenever I want to boot my RH9, I just select that drive (IDE1, Primary) from BIOS. It could be on any device - IDE2, 3, 4 - the BIOS doesn't care, it'll just pick up the MBR from whichever drive you tell it to boot from.

That should work just fine for you if your BIOS supports this... also I find it the easiest thing to do when you're experimenting. Nothing like messing up the MBR when it comes to Windows :-)

You cannot have a slave without a master drive, AFAIK. You probaly had it on cable select.

Thanks all who replyed. But there was no Marster because the BIOS didn't say there was one only slave.
