Dual monitors- change where display window loads

I just set up my dual monitors on unbuntu 9.04 using the NVidia X server settings without any problems however when a new pop-up window or display loads . . . it is situated directly between the two screen and often is hard to use. I must grab with mouse and drag to either right or left screen to read/ work with.

Im curious how to change this feature so that any new window or display picks either the right or left monitor. where to start?

This sounds like the X server either isn't setting monitor placement information via the xinerama extension, or the window manager is ignoring the information.

The output of 'xdpyinfo -ext XINERAMA' will let us know which. Also, do you know you are using twinview or dynamic twinview?

Thanks for the reply. After looking I see that I am using the twinview and do not see any dynamic twinview.

I have included the output from the code you recommended. What to do?

See this part?

Code:
XINERAMA version 1.1 opcode: 153
head #0: 2560x1024 @ 0,0
The xserver is claiming to only be one monitor with a resolution of 2560x1024, instead of two monitors at 1280x1024 each, which would show up as:

Code:
XINERAMA version 1.1 opcode: 153
  head #0: 1280x1024 @ 0,0
  head #1: 1280x1024 @ 0,0
Can you show us your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? Please include it here between [code][/code] tags.

Greetings,

Perhaps we jumped a few steps . . I am new to Linux and do not completely understand what I am to do next . . . do I enter "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" into my terminal window? I tried and it said that no such file or directory. How to access this output?

Also what is meant by the code/code bit?

thanks

Dominick

/etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't a command to run, it's a configuration file that I'd like to see. You can bring up a terminal and run 'gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf' to open the file.

Then copy it and paste it here. However, you should put [code][/code] tags it when you paste it into the post here.

Code:
See how these
lines are in a nice
separate block?
IF I were to type enough
lines, it would even
 get a scroll
bar. I'm not sure if
this will be
enough.
That's because those lines had a [code] tag in front when I typed it in, and a [/code] tag at the end.

Please do the same thing with the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. When I pulled up the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. . . . there was a blank document/file that opened?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf definitely exists on your system. Your log file says:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

So it sees and is using that file.

However, your log file makes no reference to using twinview, which makes me think you are actually using Dynamic Twinview... Are you setting up your dual monitor each time you start up X?

When I restart my machine I do have to reset-up my dual monitors. How do I modify the /etc/X11/xorg.con file?

Honestly, I'm not really up on my nvidia driver configuration questions, as I haven't used an nvidia card for a while. I do know, however, that you are using a Dynamic Twinview setup, and then monitor placement information isn't shown properly to window managers when you use Dynamic Twinview.

I would start by checking out the documentation that came with the driver. It might be as simple as adding this line to the Device section of your xorg.conf file:

Option "TwinView" "enable"

Then setting up the resolutions in nvidia-settings, and saving it to your xorg.conf file.

You can also check with the nvnews linux forum for better help specifically about the nvidia drivers:
