Dual Distro Install - Centos & Ubuntu

Hi all,

Linux newbie working his way down the Linux learning path. I’m seeing some things developed under Ubuntu that I’d like to start playing with (namely a subtitle program called “SubtitleEditor: http://home.gna.org/subtitleeditor/).

My question: Can I, (and is it a good idea?) install Ubuntu on the same machine that I have Centos? Would it be wiser to just get another laptop and do the install on a separate machine? My only criteria is desk space -- running out of room as it is. I’ll never have both distros open at the same time. Just curious if it’s a better idea to have a dedicated machine for each distro, of if it really doesn’t matter.

Best,
Kelley

You can install Centos and Ubuntu on the same machine.

You have to repartition.

If the program works under Ubuntu it ought to work under CentOS, bearing in mind that CentOS is. A stable distribution so most of the applications and libraries it contains are fairly old and well-proven.

If you mean 'disk' space, maybe another hard drive would be a better idea rather than another computer, one system on each. How much space do you have as a minimal install of a standard Ubuntu will be 6+GB and if you plan to use it and add software, etc. it will take up that space whether you are using it or not.

RPMForge have Subtitleeditor for CentOS. If you don't have their repository enabled (with the priority plug-in for yum set up, or you'll really get trouble!), you can download the rpm and install locally.

Thanks David. Yeah, in the interim I stumbled across this link and downloaded. Also installed Ubuntu as well. Thanks for the guidance.

I see you're from London. Hope to be in the UK this winter. Miss it much.

Best,
Kelley
