dual booting Window XP, Fedora Core 2

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I have a question to those who dual boot Linux and Windows XP>
Currently I have XP Pro on hd0 and Fedora core1 on hd1 using GRUB as the boot manager. I was told by many if I upgrade to Fedora Core2 that XP wouldnt boot. Some say its a problem with Fedora and others say its a problem with Kernel 2.6. If it is a problem with Fedora can I install Suse or another distro in place of Fedora without any problems?

As far as i know i dont think that you are going to face any problems in this case

I am also dual booting between fedora core and WinXp.

Neverthless there cannot be any problem either with fedora or with the kernel 2.6. There could be a grub/s problem (if there is any)

If you are facing any problem and try reconfiguring your grub. Or install an older version of grub (the one that comes with rh9)

It's an issue with the 2.6 kernel (not just Fedora), and it kicks in on a new install when it reads and writes the partition table differently from the way Windows does, and only in some situations. If you are upgrading your FC1, I don't think you will be needing the FC2 install to touch your partition table at all, so you should have no problems. I upgraded from FC1 to FC2, and now to FC3 Test1, with no problems.

Okay, total linux newb here with this problem. I know I have to type in that sfdisk command, but when I do it, it says "sfdisk: command not found". So, please have mercy on a poor linux newb and help me figure out where to get this.

Thanks for any help,
kfl

Try doing it as root.

I finally figured it out. I was typing "su" instead of "su -" to get into root. Once I did that, it worked fine.
