Dual Booting Linux Suse XP
 

I have a PC running Windows XP currently.

I partitioned my Drive to have 2 40G spaces. I want to dual boot Linux on my PC.

It seems like I have read a lot of horror stories on the dual boot systems but I don't have the option of running the OS separately. I know XP has to be installed first which it is. But I cannot mount the boot loader on the MBR of Windows or it wont boot.

What steps should I take to dual boot my machine? I have a copy of Suse Personal and I loaded it up and when it to install I looked at the partitions.
The partitions had the boot going by default to C/Windows/O then the rest of the partition table set up on hda3-5 I believe. I did not do the install because I was unsure of where it was placing LILO.

What should I do or what steps should I perform to insure a good installation?

Also I was thinking of installing Gentoo instead of Suse. Which Flavor would probably be better for someone who wants to learn as much as possible about Linux?

if you want to learn, gentoo is your best bet IMO. It rather forces you to learn =]. In SuSE you have things like YaST, which are cool, but wont help you learn =P

you sure can put the bootloader there, it will contain a seperate entry for windows, and one for linux (IE you boot up, you get a screen with a choice, linux or windows).
