Dual Boot XP and RH 9.0

Help please ppl out there!!

I have installed Windows XP on my 80gb HD using 40gb and then i partitioned my HD so i had 20gbs for Linux RH 9.0. Now i have installed RH 9.0 with Grub bootloader i cant boot back into my XP partition. But when i use a partition tool like Partition Magic i can see my XP partition and my Linux partition.

Please could some help me add XP to the Grub bootloader.

Thank you in advance

Well mostlikely you have to add and entry into your .conf file for grub for XP... In lilo it would be the lilo.conf but I don't remeber the exact name in grub.

Just look at the entry in there for linux and that should guide you well, your windows is probaly installed on /dev/hda1 if it is the first partition on the master IDE drive of the first IDE channel.

may i suggest you dont use red hat 9.x becasue its full of bugz and glitches..use a more stable version like 7.x or even 8.x whihc still has probelms

Using grub it's grub.conf.

As far as RH9 being full of bugs, I would have to disagree. I have two systems running RH8 and three systems running RH9. I have been running RH9 for a couple months or so, and have not seen any bugs yet.

Help

I am running windows xp and I want to switch to redhat 9.0, and I am having trouble. I downloaded these images:

shrike-i386-disk1
shrike-i386-disk2
shrike-i386-disk3

What happens is, the cd burning program that I use to put them on cd's does not recognize these as valid images. Was it a bad download or am I doing something wrong?

red hat 9 is a perfectly good and stable distro with access to all the latest software, the only way it would be glitchy is if someone did an upgrade to it - but that is likely to happen with any distro. A clean install should run great.

Anyway, what program are you using to burn those images?
Check out this site for instructions:
http://linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/isofaq.html

if you use nero, then it is file-burn image - then just browse to the image and you are done. If you use the nero wizard, it is cd, create new, other cd format, iso or image and then browse to it and burn. Use a good quality cd-r.

BTW, has this been double posted? I could have sworn I responded to a thread that was the same title.

What cd burning app are you using? I also downloaded the same images using winXP. Do they have the .iso extension? Is it just the first disk that gives you that error? Or all three?

well it's shocking to me also, I am full faith in RH and have been running them since 6.1... But one two clean installs of 9 I have had shutdowns and lockups running Mozzilla... if anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them.

Stock kernel, KDE, 1.7 P IV, 358Mb RAM...
Image Downloaded from RH, Stock workstation installation...

netdrain, some suggestions...

check your cd's - for quality and md5sums to see if they match
also, I see your ram amount, are you using shared devices?

do you have plug n play disabled in the bios?
are you using any unique peripherals?

I have used lots of red hat versions and fine 9 to be very good and stable. There has to be an explanation for your situation.

I had problems with Mozilla in red hat 8 - what version are you using? 1.2.1? try upgrading to 1.3.1 or 1.4 - that should fix it up if it is only mozilla locking up.

I am using roxio, and when I try to open (windows right-click>record to cd) the program opens and says that it is not a valid cd image.

So I went to the drag and drop feature (used to burn cd's in XP) and burned it like a regular data file. My question is, will this work, or do you have to unpakage the image or something?

BongFish 06-13-2003 10:23 AM

As far as I know XP can't curn images by itself.

Try downloading a demo ;) of Nero and burn them there. To do it just go to File then Burn Image then chose the image.

If your files don't have an .iso extension make sure you rename them Imagewhatever.iso.

Hope this helps.

yeah, roxio is crap compared to nero, it is a bloated piece of garbage. As mentioned, get the nero demo (email me from my guide if you like it and wanna keep it, lol).
