You need to reinstall grub after installing XP.
Boot from a random live CD, launch grub and reinstall it on your partition with the root and setup commands.

But what kind of stability problems can arise with linux installed after xp? This only can happen if you are not doing partitioning properly.
You should actually install xp before, then install linux so that grub recognizes your windows installation. But you should take care while partitioning in linux that you do not delete or format windows partition.
