I think the answer to my problem will be to reinstall linux, but in case there is an easy (?) fix, here goes:
XP=Set as Master via HD jumper / Master via IDE cable
Linux=Set as Master via HD jumper / Secondary via IDE cable
Xp was installed first on current box, Linux was installed on another pc and the HD (after setup) was added later. The hardware is very different between both systems.
LILO is setup, grub has no menu.ls.; I can see the xp os in lilo, but when I select it, pc hangs.
Do I need to disconnect 2nd hd, boot to xp, power down, reconnect 2nd hd, whack it and reload mandrake 10.1 (or whatever distro)?

Never set both Master via HD Jumper to avoid hardware conflict...
I read on another forum to setting them both as master, otherwise I would not have done that.
I set Linux HD as secondary and set XP HD as master.
Same thing.
There are on different IDE channels and both I assume plugged into the socket on the end of the IDE cable, not the middle one - in which case there isn't a problem setting them both to master, in fact that is what should be done unless you want to use cable select.
Will mandrake boot? If your using a generic kernel I cannot see why you can't get away with not installing again. When installing Mandrake was the HDD on the master IDE channel on the other computer. If so the configuration for lilo will be wrong. I think the mandrake installation CD will allow you to just reinstall lilo without reinstalling the rest of the system - try that.
Leave the Linux disk as secondary.
Boot the Mandrake CD to recovery mode (don't know how - check the Mandy forum).
Re-install Linux boot-loader (I prefer grub) to the MBR of hda, and add an entry for Windows.
For grub this would be (Windows on first partition on first hard disk);
Code:
title Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
Actually, both hd's are on the same Ide channel. They are both set via jumpers ans place on the ribbon cable as they should be (lin as master).
The problem is, I installed linux on a different box and move the disk over.
I am going to reinstall linux tonight (Ubuntu) and make sure grub as a Windows entry. I do not have a menu.lst under /grub in Mandy. Not a big problem, I should have known better.
If they are on the same channel then they can't be primary master and secondary master, they are primary master and primary slave or secondary master and secondary slave. Either put the jumpers on both hdd's to cable select or put the jumper on the hdd on the end of the cable to master and the hdd in the middle of the cable to slave
If you just did a default install and used the generic kernel then linux should just work. You may need to reconfigure xorg for the graphics though
