You can be more clear on the type of ur Internet connection

the ethernet device has to be configured
it can be done by editing connection settings by clicking on the network icon on the taskbar or just go to System->preferences->network connections edit the wired settings
mainly two type of connections

1. static
2. dhcp(dynamic)

and if u use broadband then it is different you have to go to terminal and try pppoeconf.. but I'm afraid CentOS doesnt have preinstall pppoe packages so u have to install them and then try that out

For everything use man pages

Lan cable

The OS itself does not detect cables or jumpers exterior to the machine. The NIC (Network Interface Card) may often do that detection and make the information available to the OS. It is likely that your NIC is not being detected or is misconfigured.

What can you tell us about your NIC, your local network, and your connection to the internet?
